Write Your Book’s Promise in One Sentence

Before you design a cover or write a description, write one sentence about what the reader gets.

Every good book makes a promise to its reader. Before you design a cover or write a description, write that promise in one sentence.

The sentence should say what the reader gets, such as what they will learn, feel, or be able to do. Everything else, including the title, the cover, and the description, should support it.

  • Write the sentence, then read it aloud to someone and see if they understand.
  • Use it to check your cover and description: do they match the promise?
  • Cut anything that does not serve it.
